State of Siege Declared in Argentina

* Tuesday, December 18, 2001

“I'm not sure how close we ever really have been," said Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem, deputy operations director for the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, in Washington. "We've narrowed it down to an area. Indications were there and now indicators were not there, so maybe he still is there or maybe he was killed or maybe he's left."

Meanwhile in southern Afghanistan, U.S. Marines at the Kandahar airport have begun building a compound to hold as many as 300 prisoners. But sorting out the leaders of al-Qaida and the Taliban is proving to be a major problem.

"We're still trying to sort out who we have, who we don't have and who's been killed," said Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. "And it is not an easy process."
